2026 Gate Contests

Our contests are an excellent way to showcase the artistic and literary talents of the Madeira community, allowing students to harness their creative liberties to produce thought-provoking and introspective work. Past prompts for our writing contests have included “100 Words About Home” and “A Stranger Comes to Town.” Winning pieces are featured in the annual print magazine.

Annual Dance/Gate

Dance/Gate is an annual event where dancers and writers collaborate to create a unique multi-media experience. Pieces that are submitted to GATE are shown to dancers, who then spend weeks creating choreography that pairs with the piece. Dance/Gate is the culmination of this dedicated process, as dancers, poets and authors explore their craft simulatenouly.  This event is a hallmark of Madeira's creative and collaborative arts programs, combining performing arts and literary arts for a one-of-a-kind show.

Anti - Valentine's Day

Join Gate and a star-studded lineup of Madeira writers and performers at 7 PM in the student center rotunda (next to the school store) for a celebration of all things love, except all the mushy love stuff. There will be both vocal performances and readings of poetry and short stories by fellow snails, and an open mic session will follow for any who wish to perform or share their work. There will be masks out for decoration at the event, a photo “booth”, fun Valentine's Day treats, and more. The theme is “Black Mask Masquerade”, so dress to impress!
